Diversifying museum visitors with effective engagement.

Digital Heritage Interpretation with the Visitor Information Service BOX

I read the following today;

Most museums are not good at attracting diverse visitors - those from lower socioeconomic groups as well as the protected characteristics. The Taking Part survey (England only) highlights that whilst the percentage of the population visiting museums has grown over the past ten years, the diversity of visitors has not increased. There are other similar studies in the other home nations.

When I was young, my father used to take us (my siblings and I) regularly (at least once a month) to Birmingham Science Museum.

I remember the thrill of plugging my rubber hearing tube into the various displays and standing for what seemed like hours, immersed in the audio commentaries for each exhibit.

I loved the control and the interaction, the feeling that I was directly interacting with the exhibits.

This is still true to a point - on a recent school trip to Think Tank museum of discovery, I revelled in the displays and button pressing and interaction, but still, I missed my rubber ear tubes.

With 3 or 4 schools worth of children all crawling over the displays it soon became a chaotic frenzy of micro-experiences.

I developed my Visitor Information Service Box with the goal of getting visitors reinvested with the exhibits. Give THEM control over when and what they engage with and let them use their own smart phones and tablets to interact (using headphones and earphones) for that personal interactive experience.

VIS-BOX serves digital archive information such as video, audio, galleries and documents directly to a visitors device through a local (none internet) captive portal. So all content is controlled and is selected through a simple, clear menu driven system.

VIS-BOX engages your visitor using the device that THEY prefer, less able visitors have full access to exhibits through virtual tours at no cost to them as no mobile data use is required.

VIS-BOX will engage your visitors in the way that they prefer, they will tell their friends and create repeat visits.

Museums need to move with the times and engage their visitors in a modern way; digitisation is not something to be feared and VIS-BOX contains your collections without making your property available over the internet.
